Prevention of Chikun Gunya The only known Chikun Gunya virus vaccine is no longer being produced and has very limited availability. Prevention, therefore, centers on avoiding mosquito bites when traveling to areas where Chikun Gunya occurs. Eliminating mosquito-breeding sites is another key prevention measure. Control of Mosquito breeding
1) All water tanks, barrels, containers etc.. need to be covered tightly with a lid.
2) Remove or empty water in old tyres, tin cans, buckets, drums, bottles or from other places where mosquitoes breed.
3) The premises of houses should be free of neglected bottles, buckets, pots etc.. which may collect water and provide good breeding places for the aedes mosquitoes.
4) Water collections in the terrace and parapet should be removed
5) Weeds and tall grass should be cut shot, adult mosquitoes look for these shady places to rest during the hot day light hours.
6) Pour diesel or kerosene over water collections in the premises so that the mosquito larvae will not get oxygen supply.
7) To control adult mosquitoes spray DDT, Pyrethrum etc.. frequently. To prevent mosquito bites do the following:
1) Use mosquito nets
2) When outdoors during daytime, wear long sleeved shirts and long pants.
3) The windows and ventilations should be covered with nets.
