I'm 4 weeks in after picking it up in southern India near Pondicherry. the initial 4-6 days were complete agony with muscle paralysis, joint pain, fever for 24 hours and rash. No nausea for me. After returnedin home to Australia the only 'advice' on treatment is symtomatic relief which is fine (panadeine forte with nurofen) but it dopes you out and you're not able to function properly at work. I'm trying some acupuncture and homeopathic remedies at the moment but the pain still remains.

Does anyone know if the joint pain (hands and ankles mainly) can cause permanent damage?

"Italy and other Asian countries" - Italy is in EU. Also, please list India as one of the countries where this disease is rampant right now.

I am not a doctor but can suggest you remedy for fever like this. You can take ginger juice 1 spoon three times a day. It makes the blood veins to cure whatever blockages are there. After having ginger juice you can have honey if feeling hotter that too just for tongue.

Drink boil water 3 to 4 litres in a day so that you flush out all toxins available. This fever can be treated only with discipline life style.

I've been fighting this for 2 1/2 months now. I thought it was dengue fever at first. Either way there are no medical cures. I'm not sure where you are at, but look for any herbs that fight viruses, like olive leaf extract, turmeric, ginger and wild oregano oil. If nothing else, eat lots of spicy food since most strong spices fight viruses.

For pain I found ibuprofen is more effective than acetaminophen (paracetamol). Also try taking white willow bark and feverfew for more natural pain relief. They take some time to work, though, so you may want to take both the white willow and the ibuprofen at the same time for a while. You might also need some sleep medication to help you get some sleep at night.

I got this infection on the 21 of this month which started with chill and fever after 2 days fever was gone but the rashes appeared itching so bad starts swelling then fallowed with joint pain. This is really bad to get infected, it hurts and aches all over my body i felt like as if someone is peeling off my skin, even though i take the pain killer twice a day.... it still hurts with rashes itching and swellings all over my joints discomfort and feeling nausea all the time, i can hardly walk straight, and felt i walk like a duke. i wish there is some kind of treatment available which reduce the pain and discomfort to get cure faster. Can someone suggest what can be done to ease the pain?

My mother got infected a couple of month back. Even after the fever is over, the pain was still existing. Specially in the finger joints and ankles. Now she is taking Rabium-20, and this is giving lot of relief. But I strongly suggest not to take this untill your Doctor says.

Well, I am from the place where chicunguya has paralyzed few districts of karnataka. It is deadly and the economy of these places have come down heavily. People are taking help of ayurvedic and homeo medicines and the results are mixed-kind of. This article is good for me as my wife is currently suffering from this disease.

Well, a bit surprised that India does not figure under the countries affected. If newspaper reports are to be believed, there are whole villages in the southern parts of the Karnataka state that have become dysfunctional due to widespread Chichungunya

I have picked up this virus at the end of December 2007 in South Africa, and my medical doctor tells me I am the second patient within a week he has seen with this fever.
It is an inconvenient desease, and I have had it for almost 2 months now. It appears to come and go (headaches, upper body aches and pains, but most importantly, the joint aches (I suppose much like gout or arthritis)).
Medicines don't help, I suppose one has to learn to live with it!
